Defeating Cultural Marxism

Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America, by Ted Cruz, Washington, D.C.: Regnery, 2023, 368 pages, hardcover.

Senator Ted Cruz’ well-researched and well-written polemic against cultural Marxism — Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America — can be outlined as 1) how American institutions became enforcers of evil orthodoxy; 2) what cultural Marxists are doing to stir up hate for America’s history, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Founders, and fundamental liberties; and 3) specific steps patriotic Americans can take to defeat cultural Marxism and retake American institutions.

Following the tumultuous 1960s, the New Left modified its strategy and began what has often been called the “long, slow march through the institutions.” Cruz argues that much of the credit for this shift away from the overtly violent tactics of the 1960s and toward slower cultural subversion goes to Italian communist Antonio Gramsci. In his collection of political essays known as Prison Notebooks, Gramsci posited that Western societies were resistant to communist ideology because many of the institutions of society were not connected to government. This was particularly true in America.
