The clown show over at MSNBC might have reached peak clownishness on Tuesday when a member of the New York Times’s editorial board implied the American flag is a threatening symbol of whiteness.

Mara Gay, a contributor for the leftist network, ran into some trucks that displayed the American flag and Trump signs, and she just about lost it, she told Morning Joe hostess Mika Brzezinski.

“Whiteness” is, apparently, something of an anxiety-trigger for Gay, who might just need to see a headshrinker for a check-up from the neck up. Chronic anxiety should not be left untreated.

White Trump Voters Must Be Marginalized

The discussion of “whiteness” began when Brzezinski asked about a commission to study the mostly peaceful protest at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Like most leftists, Gay actually thinks the protest was an “insurrection.” And whiteness, she told Brzezinski, threatens “our democracy.”

“This is another area where Democrats really need to get serious about talking about what this threat is,” Gay began. She’s quite concerned that Democrats “haven’t just gone ahead at this point, and said we’re doing this on our own, in terms of getting a commission together to explain to the American people how we allowed the insurrection to take place.”

Gay thinks that “really needs to move forward swiftly.”

Gay might not realize, notwithstanding her great reverence for “our democracy,” that “democracies” have ways of doing things. Establishing commissions requires a vote, not “doing this on our own.” Democrats can examine the mostly peaceful protest in committee hearings now without establishing a commission, which the GOP has wisely blocked.

Gay thinks Trump voters are a threat because they don’t believe Sleepy Joe won the election. And “we have tens of millions of Trump voters, who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others,” Gay averred.

How Gay read the minds of “tens of millions of Trump voters” she did not venture to explain.

But then came the inevitable: They’re all a bunch of yahoo racists, anyway:

I think that as long as they see Americanness as the same, as one with whiteness, this is going to continue. We have to figure out how to get every American a place at the table in this democracy. But how to separate Americanness, America, from whiteness. Until we can confront that, and talk about that, this is really going to continue.

I was on Long Island this weekend, visiting a really dear friend. And I was really disturbed. I saw dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with explicatives [sic] against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and some cases, just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing because essentially the message was clear. It was, “this is my country. This is not your country. I own this.”

Although those Americans are a minority, they must be marginalized, she said:

And so until we’re ready to have that conversation, this is going to continue. What really is concerning to me as well, it’s not just Democrats and Congress. I think there’s a large percentage of Americans, even some of my colleagues in journalism, who are invested in some way in pretending that this isn’t the threat that it is. That is the real concern, because, you know, the Trump voters who are not going to get on board with democracy, they’re a minority.

You can marginalize them long term. But if we don’t take the threat seriously, then I think we’re all in really bad shape.

Shockingly, Brzezinski nodded in agreement. “Totally agree,” she said.

NYT: She’s Misunderstood

Of course, when Gay’s remarks invited the ridicule they richly deserved, the Times itself replied.

New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay’s comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context,” it tweeted:

Her argument was that Trump and many of his supporters have politicized the American flag. The attacks on her today are ill-informed and grounded in bad-faith.

Whatever.

Gay is actually more noted for her math genius than her sparkling prose and scintillating political analysis.

Appearing with MSNBC’s Brian Williams last year, the two were quite exercised that leftist bazillionaire Michael Bloomberg said he would waste $500 million on a presidential campaign to defeat Trump.

“Somebody tweeted recently that actually with the money he spent he could have given every American $1 million,” she said.

Replied Williams, “When I read it tonight on social media, it kind of all became clear.… It’s an incredible way of putting it.”

“It’s an incredible way of putting it,” the earnest youngster agreed. “It’s true. It’s disturbing.”

No. it wasn’t true. Using the figures Williams cited from the tweet, Bloomberg could have given each American $1.68.

But Gay’s error is somehwat understandable. She took the bogus number from the mathematicians at Glamour magazine.
