Former Republican Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel announced his candidacy yesterday for the Wisconsin Supreme Court election in April 2025. Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, who has served on the Wisconsin Supreme Court since 1995, has said she will run for reelection to a fourth 10-year term.
Schimel was elected attorney general in 2014, defeating Susan Happ, and served one term, being defeated by Josh Kaul in his 2018 reelection bid. After conceding to Kaul, Governor Scott Walker appointed Schimel to the Waukesha Courty Circuit Court, where he has served since 2019.
Schimel says his candidacy comes as a response to the “new liberal Supreme Court majority” in Wisconsin. With Justice Janet Protasiewicz winning election to the court in 2023, Schimel said, “The only check on them is to take back the majority by winning in 2025.” Schimel is a supporter of Wisconsin voter ID laws, Republican state legislature maps, and the state’s abortion ban.
