Two new polls show that Representative Liz Cheney’s mask has been removed and her cover as a conservative Republican is blown: in polling data provided to the Washington Examiner on Friday, over three-quarters of Wyoming Republicans said they will not vote for her in next year’s primary. In another poll released last week by McLaughlin & Associates, more than half of those polled describe her as “liberal” despite the “R” behind her name.
Additional polls show that in one-on-one primary races between Cheney and her two closest Republican rivals, she would lose overwhelmingly. She would lose to Wyoming House Representative Chuck Gray 24 percent to 63 percent and to Cheyenne businessman Darin Smith 22 percent to 54 percent.
Said John McLaughlin:
It is very clear that Wyoming voters … want an active, aggressive … campaign … to hold Liz Cheney accountable for her bad vote on impeachment and her current attacks on President Trump on the January 6th committee.
They want to see Liz Cheney defeated next year.
She is now running naked as a Democrat. The day before she was ousted from her Number Three position in the House in May she declared:
Today, we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol, in an effort to steal the election, has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence.
Millions of Americans have been misled by the former president. They have heard only his words but not the truth as he continues to undermine our democratic process, sowing seeds of doubt about whether democracy [sic] really works at all.
This is not about policy. This is not about partisanship. This is about our duty as Americans.
Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the lie. I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch, in silence, while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.
After the voting, Cheney further stoked the fires of discontent among Wyoming Republicans. She vowed to “do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office.… I plan to lead the fight to do that.”
For the record, Trump beat Biden in Wyoming in 2020, 70 percent to 27 percent.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed that Cheney was now one of her own by naming Cheney to the committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol incident. Said Pelosi: “We are very honored and proud she has agreed to serve on the committee.” Cheney returned the favor, calling the incident “the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814 [by the British].”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced her defection: “It would seem to me, since I didn’t hear from her, that maybe she’s closer to [Pelosi] than to us.”
No “maybe” about it. In another poll by Lee & Associates released on July 26, they “found … Liz Cheney [to be] incredibly unpopular.” Specifically, the poll found Donald Trump, Jr. scoring a 55 favorability rating while Cheney scored a -43. This is down seven points from her negative 36 rating measured by the Club for Growth in May.
These show that, according to Tristan Justice writing in The Federalist, Liz Cheney is “the most unpopular Republican in the country among GOP voters.”
Her mask has been removed and her cover blown. She can no long hide behind the “R”. Wyoming Republican voters will relegate her to a footnote in history next year.
