Why the Left Hates Ben Carson

Man, the left-wing attacks on Dr. Ben Carson, the famous neurosurgeon who has become a leading contender in the race for the Republican nomination for president, have become downright despicable. Of course the liberals won’t mutter a word of protest, no matter how slanderous the assaults become.

Anthea Butler, a tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania, declared in a recent tweet that Carson deserves the “coon of the year” award for defending the right of private individuals to fly the Confederate flag. When Carson’s campaign manager, Barry Bennett, called the university to protest, he was told that the professor, who is black, was merely practicing her academic freedom.

Can you imagine what would have happened if, during the two previous presidential campaigns, a white college professor had said that Barack Obama deserved a “coon of the year award”? The cries of outrage would have shaken this country from one end to the other. In fact, they’d probably still be going on.

Then GQ magazine ran a piece with the headline, “F**k Ben Carson” (except it didn’t use any asterisks in the first word). The author, Drew Magary, attacked Dr. Carson for saying he would not have cooperated if he were faced with a potential shooter, as happened on that Oregon college campus.

“Not only would I probably not cooperate with him,” Carson replied, “I would not just stand there and let him shoot me. I would say ‘Hey, guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.’”

We all would like to think that we’d behave heroically if we were ever faced with a similar situation. Of course it’s better to fight back than to wait to be murdered in cold blood.

That’s why we salute the brave passengers on board United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth plane taken by hijackers on September 11, 2001. After learning of the attacks on the World Trade Towers, the passengers refused to allow their plane to be turned into a deadly missile. Instead, they rallied to Todd Beamer’s cry, “Are you guys ready? Okay, let’s roll,” and stormed the cockpit. Although they died when the plane crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, their heroics prevented the plane from being flown into the White House or the Capitol building.

Had a white person said the same thing Ben Carson did, I doubt if the media would have paid any attention. But it’s the fact that he’s a conservative that has the Left so angry at Dr. Carson. And that he’s such a spectacular example of the success that is possible for an impoverished black child to achieve in this country.

The Left hates anyone who rejects their philosophy of dependence on the government. But it saves its worst vitriol for a black American who rejects their paternalistic solutions. Remember how vicious the attacks were on Clarence Thomas, when that “uppity” black was nominated for a position on the Supreme Court?

Now Ben Carson is getting the Thomas treatment. Thankfully, he is not afraid to expose what the media are trying to do. In a recent speech at the National Press Club, he pointed out:

There is only one business in America that is [explicitly] protected by the Constitution and that is the press. They were supposed to expose and inform people in a non-partisan way. When they become partisan, which they are, they distort the system as it was supposed to work. And they allow the side that they pick to get away with all kinds of things.

Dr. Carson said that the media have “a sacred obligation to the people to be honest,” but they have betrayed that trust. Then he told the media reps in the room, “I gotta tell you guys, that’s why people don’t trust you anymore. You’re down there with used car salesmen.”

Until next time, keep some powder dry.
