Ann Coulter’s “Demonic,” A Compelling Read

This brilliant book was published shortly before the Occupy Wall Street mobs began their infantile vigils against capitalism, the banks, and anything remotely conservative. Which proves that Ann Coulter understands the liberal left better than practically anyone else in America. Her latest book, Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America, provides incredible, bone-chilling insights into the mind of the liberal. Everything she says in the book about the psychology of mobs applies one hundred percent to what we are now witnessing in cities all across America. She describes the OWS mobs to a tee when she writes:

A mob is an irrational, childlike, often violent organism that derives its energy from the group. Intoxicated by messianic goals, the promise of instant gratification, and adrenaline-pumping exhortations, mobs create mayhem, chaos, destruction, leaving a smoldering heap of wreckage for their leaders to climb to power.

Coulter was inspired by a book published in 1895 by Gustave Le Bon, a French physician, scientist, and social psychologist, with the intriguing title, The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind. In it, Le Bon analyzed the mind of the mob and its potentially lethal behavior. Coulter writes: “Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini used his book to learn how to incite a mob. Our liberals could have been Le Bon’s study subjects.” It is also quite possible that George Soros also read Le Bon’s book, for it is obvious that he is the invisible hand behind all of the efforts to use the mob in the campaign to reelect Barack Obama. Coulter writes:

All the characteristics of mob behavior set forth by Le Bon in 1895 are evident in modern liberalism — simplistic, extreme black-and-white thinking, fear of novelty, inability to follow logical arguments, acceptance of contradictory ideas, being transfixed by images, a religious worship of their leaders, and a blind hatred of their opponents.

Coulter regales us with examples of liberal mental behavior on each of these points. Of course we have seen them on liberal bumper stickers for some time, and still do. Simple slogans like: Make Love Not War, Save the Planet, No Nukes, Save the Whales, Imagine Peace, Yes We Can. And we also see the same simplicity on signs carried by the OWS protesters: Smash Capitalism. People Not Profits. Go Green. And that is why anyone approaching an OWS mobster with reasonable argument is shouted down and cursed.

As for leader-worship, liberal blogger Michael Whack describes what it was like to shake Obama’s hand. The adoring liberals around him wanted to shake the hand that shook the hand of Barack Obama. It was the equivalent of kissing a religious relic. Coulter explains:

The Left’s passionate adoration of President Obama — and Clinton, FDR, JFK, Teddy Kennedy, and on and on — are the primitive emotions of a mob. These are sentiments generally associated with women, children, and savages, according to Le Bon.

Coulton rakes liberal personalities like Al Sharpton, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, Michael Moore, and other such Democrat luminaries, over the coals with great delight. Their stupidity is not only mindboggling but also quite entertaining. While most of us conservatives rarely watch these comedians, Ann has collected such an incredible record of their crass bombast that we conservatives may want to occasionally watch them just for laughs. The only problem is that these liberal fanatics are serious and are endangering America with their witless brains.

Coulter devotes several chapters contrasting the American Revolution with the French Revolution, the all-time great liberal revolution, which ended with the famous Reign of Terror. There the mob ruled in spades, and the guillotine, the French razor, was worked overtime for blood thirsty spectators. And every communist and socialist revolution that has come after the French exercise in savagery has only increased the number of victims murdered in the name of social improvement, racial purity, or the need to eliminate the gap between the rich and the poor. If you kill all the rich, you eliminate the gap.

That is why the present agitation by the left to close the gap between the rich and the poor is a siren song that can only lead to disaster. As long as this is a free country, there will always be a gap between the rich and the poor. And it makes no difference how big or small that gap is, it is not the role of a government under our Constitution to worry about the size of that gap. That gap is determined by economic conditions that the present liberal government keeps tampering with.

If you are a conservative you will want to read this book, not for what it tells us about conservatism but for what it tells of the liberal mindset and its plans for our future. Coulter has had the courage and stamina to step into the putrid demonic pit of liberalism and come back with a report that can only make us soberly understand the deadly force we are facing. If there is a party of Satan in America, it is the Democrat Party, and that is why the title of the book is Demonic, and that is why the election in 2012 is so crucial.

Coulter, a skilled and engaging historian, writes: “The closest this country has been to the violent mobs of the French Revolution was the upheaval of the anti-war protests and race riots of the late sixties — all led by liberals.” She takes us through that period lest we forget what it was like, when college authorities caved in to the “idealists” rampaging their campuses.

She reminds us that William Ayers, who put a bomb in the Pentagon, now teaches childhood education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His wife, Bernardine Dohrn, called for revolutionary war in the United States, praised the Manson family of murderers, urged students to kill their parents, and is now professor at Northwestern University’s Children and Justice Center. It was in their home that Obama announced his intention to run for the Illinois senate.

She has a powerful chapter on how Democrats like George Wallace, Bull Connor, Orval Faubus, and Democrats in Congress opposed passage of Civil Rights laws. She writes:

While Democrats are the party of the mob, Republicans are the party of calm order, willing to breach the peace only when it comes to great transgressions against humanity — slavery, abortion, and terrorism.

Of course, it was Lincoln, the Republican president who freed the slaves. It was the Republicans who passed the 14th Amendment granting them citizenship and the 15th Amendment giving them the right to vote.

Yet, today, Congress’s Black Caucus is largely a pawn of the Democrats, belonging to the party that traditionally favored slavery, while railing against Republicans who fought for their freedom.

Coulter contrasts the behavior of Tea Party demonstrators against the left-wing, liberal mobs that generally verge on violence. Tea Partiers are orderly, well-dressed, and they clean up their litter. The liberal mob is just the opposite, leaving their filth behind for the city maintenance people to clean up.

Another aspect of liberal mob behavior Coulter takes up is their hatred of the opposition. The way liberal bloggers and anchor persons treated Sarah Palin is an example of that unabashed hatred. From the Late Show with David Letterman to Saturday Night Live, never has a vice-presidential candidate been treated to such extreme ridicule and hatred as Sarah Palin. Interviewed by such media authorities as Katie Couric and Charles Gibson, Palin was asked questions no one else would be asked just to humiliate her. Couric asked her what books she was reading, a question Palin was not prepared to answer. The result is that Couric “proved” that Palin was an ignoramus. Gibson asked her what she thought of the Bush Doctrine. Since there is no Bush Doctrine, Palin was caught off-guard. She assumed there was a Bush Doctrine she should have known about. But, of course, there was none. Both top media interviewers had accomplished their mission: humiliate Sarah Palin and show the public that she is stupid.

Coulter writes: “Democrats are heirs to the French Revolution, the uprising of a mob. Conservatives are heirs to the American Revolution and the harmonious order of a republic… That’s why liberals avoid mentioning the French Revolution …. Every single American knows about the Third Reich, a more recent and efficient barbarism than the French Revolution. But Hitler got his playbook from Robespierre, as did all the great liberal ‘reformers’ of the twentieth century, from Lenin to Hugo Chavez.”

Yet, as Coulter points out, Cornell University doesn’t have a single course on the French Revolution. Nor does UCLA’s history department have a course on the French Revolution. Even Harvard’s history department offers only one course on the French Revolution. But they have a course on “Women Acting Globally.”

Coulter writes: “Liberals don’t just hate tradition and morality, they hate God….God oversees individual souls, but Satan has the mob.”

Although this book was written and published before the present OWS mobs began their protests across the nation, Coulter’s advice to conservatives is quite appropriate for the present situation:

Unless conservatives stop capitulating and start defending the nation from liberal ferocity, it will never end …. As Nixon said of the student riots in the sixties, “This is the way civilizations die.” He cited Sinclair Lewis, saying, “None of us has a right to suppose that it cannot happen here.”… To appease a mob is to play Russian roulette with civilization.

Conservatives must read this book in order to understand the enemy we face. The enemy is now occupying our city squares, and it is now time to stop bowing and scraping and apologizing to the barbarians who, if they had their way, would create their own American version of the French Revolution with a more technologically advanced guillotine.
