Xi Jinping, along with other world leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa, took part in a virtual BRICS summit to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict. The summit was hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who recalled South African diplomats from Israel earlier this month.
China has been supportive of a two-state solution in the past, and reaffirmed that position by telling the BRICS summit, “China supports the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent state.” Xi called for a two-state solution, saying Palestinian independence would provide long term peace and stability: “There can be no sustainable peace and security in the Middle East without a just solution to the question of Palestine.”
Xi also called for an international peace conference, stating, “China calls for an early convening of an international peace conference that is more authoritative to build international consensus for peace,” and also stated that China is providing humanitarian aid to Gaza in response to the humanitarian crisis: “China will provide more supplies and assistance according to the needs of the people.”
