Hunter Biden was subpoenaed by House Republicans on November 8 for a closed-door interview as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Today, Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell said in a letter to the House Oversight Committee Chair Representative James Comer (R-Ky.), “We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We therefore propose opening the door.” In the letter, Lowell requested a public hearing instead of a closed-door interview, stating, “A public proceeding would prevent selective leaks, manipulated transcripts, doctored exhibits, or one-sided press statements.”
The House Oversight Committee and Comer responded to the letter, saying on X, “Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won’t stand with House Republicans.” In the statement they said Biden should have an opportunity to testify publicly, but they expect Biden to cooperate with the subpoena: “We expect full cooperation with our subpoena for a deposition but also agree that Hunter Biden should have opportunity to testify in a public setting at a future date.”
