Deep State Politics and the Papal Election

On Thursday, May 8, the papal conclave to choose a successor to Pope Francis came to an abrupt end after only two days. White smoke from the Sistine Chapel signalled that the voting cardinals found a two-thirds majority, and within minutes the 267th pope emerged on the same balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica where 18 days before, his predecessor had stood.

The new pope is the former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the first U.S. citizen elected as pontiff, and the second pope from the “New World.” He chose the name Leo XIV.
